Glynn County working its way through compliance with ADA requirements

BRUNSWICK | The 2004 G-8 Summit brought President George W. Bush and other global leaders together in Glynn County, catching the eye of the world and the U.S. Department of Justice.

When Justice Department officials showed up shortly afterward to survey county buildings and facilities for compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act, Glynn County Assistant Administrator Becky Rowell said she at first suspected the attention was due to the summit.

That turned out to be wrong.

“I asked, ‘Why us?’ It was completely random,’’ she said.

A 31-year-old Northside woman escaped serious injury Thursday night when she was dragged by her hair by another woman in a green Chevrolet Impala as it drove down the 800 block of Golfair Boulevard.

Police said the victim got into a fistfight with the other woman after they pulled up next to each other at a stoplight at 11:30 p.m. The victim was walking back to her car when the other woman grabbed her hair and drove off. Breathing a bit heavily after racing around the flat-track roller derby rink, 10-year-old Ally Lenhard slid into a nearby chair.

She had just racked up a dozen or so points for her team, fighting her way through a scrum of girls, some years older.

The points were nice, but the real exhilaration came just from the playing, said Ally, who skates under the name “Scrappy Alleycat.”

“It feels like I’m really flying,” she said later. “It feels really good, everyone cheering you on.”

3 downtown buildings added to historic list

A trio of time-tested Jacksonville structures have been named to a new most endangered historic sites list.

Known as the Laura Street Trio, the Florida Life, Bisbee and Old Florida National Bank buildings at the intersection of Laura and Forsyth streets downtown were added to the historic list Thursday, as announced by the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation. The three buildings were erected after the historic “great fire” in Jacksonville in 1901.
