Some large and interesting building permits were issued in the past week:

■ The city of Jacksonville is spending $2.7 million to renovate the Jaguars locker room at EverBank Field, contracting with Turner Construction.

■ The city will also spend $1.5 million to complete a city-owned soccer facility at Patton Park on Hodges Boulevard, contracting with Kirby Development.

■ Beach United Methodist Church will spend $2.5 million to renovate the former Walmart at the corner of Beach Boulevard and San Pablo Road for its new Church of Eleven22. Cogun is doing the work on the almost 40,000 square feet.

Just walking into the Smilestylist offices in Ponte Vedra Beach, one could never tell it’s a dentist’s office.

Slick track lighting with conical red shades hanging from the ceiling gives a warm hue in the lobby. Beyond the front desk, a photo studio with sophisticated strobe flashes set the stage for many of the pictures that dot the walls. Those pictures feature many of the patients of Smilestylist, which also has its own modeling agency as part of the cosmetic dentistry practice run by Jason and Colleen Olitsky.

Intuition Ale Works looking for second site to accommodate store, restaurant demands

Intuition Ale Works has only been open for 18 months, but owner Ben Davis already has his eyes on expansion and a new location.

He doesn’t plan to abandon his King Street brewery and taproom. What he wants to do is to build a whole new brewery in addition.

The problem, he said, is space. He expects to brew about 2 1/2 times as much beer this year as he did in 2011.

Old Jacksonville museum becomes a space for weddings and meetings

The multicolored sign next to the arched entrance says it's The Museum.

But while the building at 4160 Boulevard Center Drive in Jacksonville was an art museum from the mid-1960s until 2001, it's been empty until the new sign was added last month.

The name signals a new use, remade to look like what it once was for: Wedding receptions, proms, fundraisers and cocktail parties in gallery spaces accented with local art.

Jacksonville-based caterer Executive Food Service rented the former museum from Freestone Developers, local investors who own the site inside the Midtown Centre off Beach Boulevard.

First Coast housing purchases increasing, jobless figure dropping, says UNF economist

Figures for the First Coast in the past month show more signs of an improving local economy.

University of North Florida economist Paul Mason said a compilation of economic indicators and the consumer price index shows the economic environment is showing positive trends. Mason said Friday that housing purchases and prices are up, unemployment is down and inflation remained stable from March to April.

“For housing, for the second month in a row, the prices and the numbers of units sold, single family homes, condos both went up and rents, too,” Mason said.
